Annual Report on the State of Citizens' Health: Cancer cases rise in Bulgaria

In 2022, for the first time in recent years, there is an increase in the incidence of malignant neoplasms, according to the 2022 Annual Report on the State of Citizens' Health approved today by the government. The incidence of breast cancer, gastrointestinal cancer and male genital cancer is highest. 

The document also reads that the birth rate continues to decline. Bulgaria continues to have the highest total mortality rate among the EU countries - 18.4 per 1,000 people compared to the EU average of 11.5. Circulatory system diseases (59.8%), neoplasms (13.7%), and COVID-19 (7.6%) were among the most common causes of death in 2022.
