The state will not close coal-fired power plants

Bulgaria’s Minister of Environment and Water Julian Popov

"We will not close coal-fired power plants, the market will close them, it is closing them now", Bulgaria’s Minister of Environment and Water Julian Popov said for the BNR. Minister Popov predicted that there is no chance for them to function after 2030. Julian Popov recalled that currently 25% of electricity is produced from renewable sources given that the country is yet to develop wind energy.

"Most private power plants very seriously consider abandoning coal within three years", said Julian Popov.

"The Maritsa-East region has the potential to attract BGN 20-30 billion in investments within 10 years if there is a regulatory environment, clarity and predictability", Minister Julian Popov further said.

According to Julian Popov, a fair transition from coal and natural gas to renewable energy means that a significant number of jobs and energy poor people are not affected.
