This is the seventh time that the Sofia Municipal Council has failed to elect a chairperson. In the run-off vote, the candidate from the coalition We Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria (PP-DB) - Save Sofia, Tsvetomir Petrov, received 26 votes, while the BSP for Bulgaria candidate, Diana Tonova, received only 9 votes.
Mayor Vasil Terziev called an urgent meeting of municipal councillors to find a successful formula for the functioning of the municipal parliament. "I hope that we will be wise today and find a reasonable solution," he said.

Later, as no agreement was reached, the election of the head of Sofia City Council was postponed until 8 February this year.
