CIA report: Bulgaria is 11th fastest shrinking nation in the world

According to a CIA report, quoted by Nova TV, Bulgaria is the 11th fastest shrinking nation in the world, and the 25th highest aging nation.

The data from last year have also been analyzed by the UN which monitors the overall fertility rate or the average number of children born by one woman. According to this indicator, Europe stands at 1.5, while the necessary number of points is 2.1 points so the population does not shrink.

“The projection is that the population in this country will go down by about 30% in the next 20 years,” says Prof. Nadezhda Ilieva from the National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. In her words, in 2050, the population of Bulgaria will be 4.5 million – and not so much because of the birth rate but because of the aging population and the high mortality rate.
