There is no risk of Austria making a claim if Bulgaria, Romania, and Greece decide to conclude a trilateral agreement to abolish border controls between the three countries, Romanian MEP Eugen Tomac said in an interview with BTA. In his words, such a move does not require the consent of the European Commission. "It only needs to be informed", Eugen Tomac explains, adding that "this is a natural decision that our governments can take, given the humiliation to which Romanian and Bulgarian citizens have been subjected for so many years".

The MEP from the European People's Party expressed the opinion that the governments of Romania and Bulgaria did not have a common strategy for Schengen until 2022, and the communication between Bucharest and Sofia on this issue has been "superficial".
