5% or around 400,000 people in Bulgaria suffer from rare diseases, with approximately 75% being genetic. Due to missing registries, however, it is difficult to establish the actual number of patients with such diagnoses, reported BNR Plovdiv.

In order to waise awarensess about the problems of people with rare diseases, fourth graders from Plovdiv danced a colorful horo chain dance in the town center to the sounds of Rhodope songs performed by a folklore formation from the village of Orehovo. The Institute for Rare Diseases reports that legislative changes have already been initiated to improve access to treatment for people with rare diseases. An increase in the number of diseases included in newborn screening is also expected.
