Poultry farmers warn of fraudulent schemes with eggs and chicken from Romania and Ukraine

Eggs imported into Bulgaria from Romania and Ukraine are being repackaged, re-dated and sold by Bulgarian traders as local produce. There are also imports of whole chickens which are declared as frozen thighs and then leave the transshipment points as Bulgarian production.

These irregularities have been reported by the Association for Industrial Poultry Farming, as BNR reporter Veselina Milanova tells us. 20-25 day old eggs from Ukraine are imported into the country, while the shelf life is 28 days, the poultry farmers said. The cost of the imports is lower than that of Bulgarian products, so the traders are making a profit, says Daniel Bojankov of the association. The industry has been reporting these abuses for almost a year, but there have been almost no inspections.
