Nurgyul Salimova with second loss at Women's Candidates Tournament in Toronto

Nurgyul Salimova lost to Alexandra Goryachkina in the sixth round of the FIDE Women's Candidates Tournament 2024 in Toronto, Canada. This was the first classical game between the two since the World Cup Final in August 2023, which the third-ranked Russian won in tiebreak.

Tomorrow, the Bulgarian chess player will play with the black pieces against Kateryna Lagno from Russia.

After the sixth round Nurgyul Salimova occupies the fifth position in the standings with 2.5 points (one win, two losses and three draws). Tan Zhongyi of China ranks first with 4,5 points, followed by Alexandra Goryachkina with 4 points and Kateryna Lagno with 3.5 points.

At the end of the year, the winner of the tournament will compete for the world title against the current champion, Ju Wenjun from China.
