Bulgarians make up 1.4% of the EU population, NSI data shows

More than 70% live in cities

As of 31 December 2023, Bulgaria's population is 6 445 481, or 1.4% of the EU population, according to the latest data from the National Statistical Institute. There are 3 097 698 men (48.1%) and 3 347 783 women (51.9%). Men predominate in the age group up to 55, while the proportion of women increases with age.

Half of the country's population (51.5%) lives in two of Bulgaria's six regions - South-West (31.3%) and South-Central (20.2%), while the North-West region is the least populated, with 664 thousand people, or 10.3% of the country's population.

23.8% of the total population is aged 65 and over.

The number of children under the age of fifteen is 911,025, or 14.1% of the total population.

As of 31.12.2023, 73.5% of the country's inhabitants live in bigger towns and 26.5% in villages.
