Bulgaria Today – 24 May 2024

Welcome to the festive edition of Bulgaria Today on Friday, May 24 - the Day of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius, Bulgarian Alphabet, Education and Culture and of Slavonic Literature!

First on the program, we’ll talk about history. Medieval Bulgarian literature specialist Associate Professor Diana Atanasova has doubts about whether 855 is the exact year the Glagolitic alphabet was created. In an enlightening interview, she explains the significance of what happened in the 9th century.

Next, we take you to a delightfully unique village school that not only manages to self-sustain but to thrive in today's challenging conditions with the help of the community and the local Benedictine monastery.

We will also listen to the Hymn of Cyril and Methodius, without which no celebration of May 24 can go in Bulgaria.

And lastly, in our Song of the Day section, we tell you about the collaboration between piano virtuoso Daniel Verstappen and singer Nina Nikolina, which resulted in a fine piece of music - the song "Rayna".

  • 06'05 - Hymn of Cyril and Methodius
  • 24'16 - Song of the Day
