For the first time, Bulgaria has less than 3 million working citizens out of a total population of less than 6.5 million, according to the National Statistical Institute. More than 280 000 jobs are currently unfilled, a figure that is expected to reach 800 000 in the next five years.

The data was presented by Peter Velev, chairman of the India-Bulgaria Business Chamber, at a forum on importing skilled labour from India.

"India has extensive experience in providing labour and has a proven track record of adhering to the intended purpose of work visas without abuse," said Tsvetan Simeonov, chairman of the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
