In different cities of the country with military rituals, wreath laying and other events, Bulgarians honoured the memory of the emblematic poet and revolutionary Hristo Botev and other heroes who died for the freedom of Bulgaria

The successful end of the 76th edition of the National Tourist March "In the Footsteps of Botev's rebel detachment" from Kozloduy to Okolchitsa Peak - the path walked by the revolutionaries in 1876 from the Danube River to the Vratsa region of the Balkan Range, where Hristo Botev found his death - was announced.

A record number of 1,800 participants, including more than 1,400 schoolchildren from all over the country, took part in the march, which is 120 km long, BNR correspondent Iva Antonova reported from Vratsa.

The official program of the national pilgrimage to Okolchitsa peak in memory of the heroes began with a prayer for Bulgaria, Botev's poem "Elegy" was recited.

At 12 o'clock a siren system was activated in the country for 2 minutes, during which the Bulgarians bowed their heads in respect to the memory of those who lost their lives for the freedom of Bulgaria.
