Heavy Traffic and Long Delays at Bulgarian-Romanian Border Crossings

The Ministry of the Interior reports heavy traffic at the border crossing points Kardam, Oryahovo, and Durankulak at the exit for trucks to Romania.

BNR correspondent Maya Raynova reports that the queue of heavy goods vehicles at the Kardam border crossing with Romania is four kilometers long. At the Durankulak checkpoint, the queue is two to three kilometers long. Buses and cars are allowed through with priority.

The delay for heavy trucks is more than 48 hours, drivers said. Border police told BNR that due to road repairs at Ruse, some traffic is being diverted through Durankulak, where the infrastructure is not designed for such capacity. The two crossings are operating at full capacity but are unable to cope with the increased flow of vehicles during the summer tourist season. Delays are exacerbated by checks on passengers in non-EU coaches.
