Dupnitsa hospital hires prisoner to fill staff shortage

Dr Karastoyanov was the hospital's anaesthetist before he was jailed for murder

The director of Dupnitsa hospital has asked the state to allow Dr Nikolai Karastoyanov, who is serving a prison sentence for murder, to return to work as an anaesthetist. The request is a precedent set by the director of Bobov Dol prison, Krum Petrov.

The conditions that the hospital will have to meet for Dr Karastoyanov to be reinstated are still under discussion, BNT has learned. Karastoyanov is serving a four-year sentence for the murder of a young man linked to criminal gangs who harassed his daughter. If he returns to the hospital, he will not only help the health facility, but also reduce his sentence, as one day of work counts as two days served.
