Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey take part in joint mine counter measures operation in the Black Sea

The first joint operation of the newly formed Mine Counter Measures Task Group Black Sea involving Bulgaria, Turkey and Romania is to take place July 2-16, the Bulgarian news agency BTA reports.

The last time such an operation was carried out was during World War 2 when the Bulgarian shores were swept of mines. Now, the three NATO member countries will take part in eliminating the danger of mines in the Black Sea, together, so as to ensure safe and free navigation in the waters of the three countries. Two more operations will be held until the end of the year which are yet to be specified. As of 1 January next year, the group command will be assumed by Bulgaria for 6 months, after which it will be Romania’s turn. During the operation the ships will navigate the fairway from Istanbul via Burgas and Constanta. They will also take part in the Bulgarian navy exercises with international participation Breeze 2024.
