Around 45% of the country's eligible young people voted in the European Parliament elections on 9 June.
The data comes from the Youth Participation in Democratic Life project, in partnership with the Centre for Human Resources Development and the National Youth Forum, and is based on the exit poll conducted by Gallup International Balkan Agency on election day.
The highest share of youth votes went to the party There is Such a People (ITN) - 23 per cent of all those who voted for the party. The Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) came in second with 19 per cent. The coalition We Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria (PP-DB) followed with 14 per cent. A tenth of those who voted for GERB were young people between the ages of 18 and 30. The number of young people who voted for the BSP was 6 per cent.
According to the National Statistical Institute (NSI), the number of young people in the country between the ages of 15 and 29 in 2023 will be 872 339, or 13.5% of the population. Of these, 587,829 will have reached the age of majority. The total number of people who voted for the European Parliament on 9 June was 2,073,730, of whom 12.8%, or around 265,400, were young people.
