Bulgaria has requested the European Commission to enact a safeguard mechanism for Bulgarian egg producers over excess imports from Ukraine, Minister of Agriculture and Food Georgi Tahov announced.
At a meeting with representatives of the Association of Industrial Poultry, Minister Tahov stated that he had taken the first step for the protection of producers, and that he had submitted data about the situation in the sector to the Council of Ministers in Brussels. As a result of the joint efforts by several member countries, a safeguard mechanism has been introduced for activating a tariff quota beyond which a customs duty is applied with regard to the import of eggs from Ukraine. Georgi Tahov pointed out that to apply safeguard measures Brussels needs to make an assessment, within four months, of the state of the EU market, or of the market of one or several member countries of the product in question.
