120 kg of gold seized at Capitan Andreevo BCP

Customs officials have seized a record 120 kg of gold at the Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint on the border with Turkey. Gold bars, coins and jewellery were seized. The driver, a Bulgarian national, was arrested and charged. Another man with Bulgarian and Turkish citizenship was in the car with him. The value of the gold is more than 5 million euro.

Interior Minister Atanas Ilkov said that the smuggling ring had been operating for several months. "Most likely, the precious metal is first transported to Turkey and then returned to Europe through the same channel as finished products, which are then offered on the European market," he added. The cache of gold items was very well concealed in the vehicle. It took the investigators hours to get to it.
