Large amount of radioactive metal found in a house in Karlovo

A large amount of the extremely expensive metal americium was found during an operation by the District Prosecutor's Office in Plovdiv, the Ministry of Interior and the State Agency "National Security". According to BNT sources, the metal was found and seized from a house in Karlovo. 

During the operation, agents from the State Security Agency and special police from the Interior Ministry were assisted by firefighters with special equipment. 

The action was coordinated personally by the acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov, three people were detained.

Americium is a type of isotope that is stored under special conditions because of its ionizing radiation. It is named after America. The element was produced artificially in 1944 by Glenn Seaborg's team from Berkeley, California at the University of Chicago's Metallurgical Laboratory as part of the Manhattan Project that led to the development of the American atomic bomb.
