A meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council today will examine the overall situation, developments, emerging threats and changes in the Schengen area. EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson and Hungary's interior minister are expected to propose that checks at the Schengen land borders should also be abolished for Bulgaria and Romania.

On 30 December 2023, the EU Council decided to lift controls at the air and sea borders with Bulgaria and Romania. A further Council decision is needed to set the date for the lifting of checks at the internal land borders with Bulgaria and Romania.
