The bonito season attracts Bulgarians to Edirne with low prices

Fish has become the most purchased item by Bulgarian tourists, who flock to Edirne’s markets for the affordable deals. Bonitos weighing between 300-400 grams are sold for 125 Turkish lira, which, according to the exchange rate, is roughly BGN 6 (EUR 3). According to merchants, Bulgarian tourists benefit from the high exchange rate of the lev due to the devaluation of the Turkish lira. One lev is exchanged for 19.12 Turkish lira.

''Our neighbors from Bulgaria, who mainly come on Fridays to buy fish, say that bonito here is much cheaper than in their country. They buy 10-15 pieces at a time", says fish seller Yusuf Çimen. According to other sellers, there is also great interest in other types of fish - sea bass, baby bluefish, horse mackerel. Edirne’s merchants expect the active fish trade with Bulgarian guests to continue through the coming months, November and December, reported Radio Kardzhali.
