President Radev again refers the amendments to the Constitution to the Constitutional Court

Bulgarian President Rumen Radev today reiterated his request to the Constitutional Court to declare unconstitutional the amendments to the Constitution made by the 49th National Assembly.

The Bulgarian Head of State's objections are against the abolition of the ban on dual citizenship as a compulsory condition for the eligibility of deputies and the introduction of the principle of the continuity of the mandate of deputies and the parliament, which is not consistent with other existing provisions and leads to the fact that candidates for MPs can be sitting MPs at the same time.

"This...calls into question the legitimacy of the decisions that the National Assembly, which is still in session, can take," Radev noted.

The president also objects to the provisions on the formation of a caretaker government. According to the amendments, the president is obliged to choose a caretaker prime minister from among the president of the National Assembly, the governor or deputy governor of the Bulgarian National Bank, the president or deputy president of the Court of Auditors and the national ombudsman or his/her deputy.
