Minister of Culture Nayden Todorov awarded a Guardian of Heritage certificate to archaeologist Professor Lyudmil Vagalinski for his significant contribution to the discoveries made in the ancient city of Heraclea Sintica near Petrich.
A well-preserved two-meter-high statue with a head was found at Heraclea Sintica

Minister Naydenov stated that Prof. Vagalinski’s excavations have changed history. “We have known about Heraclea for 22 years, and studies of the ancient city have been going on for 17 years. Heraclea Sintica is a site that has to be included in the UNESCO list. I believe that we are yet to learn what role Heraclea Sintica played, even though it is talked about now so much, we still underestimate it. I believe that when it becomes a matter of discussion internationally, we shall find out what kind of treasure we have in Petrich because it will change the entire region, it will change the way people regard Bulgaria, the attitude of the world to the region of Struma River,” Minister Naydenov said.
