Sofia City Hall is planning a light show instead of fireworks for the New Year's celebrations, it's press office announced.

The show, which will be part of the programme of the New Year's Concert at Knyaz Alexander I Square, will be designed with consideration for children, pets and people with illnesses, who are most vulnerable to loud noise, the municipality said. They are urging the citizens of Sofia not to use pyrotechnics, even though the law does not prohibit them between 6 pm and 2 am on New Year's Eve.

Ten patrol teams will be on the lookout for the illegal sale and use of prohibited items such as firecrackers, rockets, Roman candles and pyrotechnic batteries during the holiday period. Fines range from €50 to €150, with additional property fines of €150 to €250.

The Four Paws Foundation is also calling for responsible New Year celebrations without fireworks, as the deafening blasts can panic animals.
