Caretaker Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev was welcomed today at the "Kulata" border checkpoint on Bulgaria’s border with Greece with bread, salt, honey and wishes for a healthy and prosperous year. He went there to check the new organization after Bulgaria became a full member of Schengen on January 1, 2025. Earlier, at midnight, the barriers at the checkpoint were lifted and the employees of the control institutions left the inspection and control booths, BNR correspondent Keti Trencheva reported.
"I am sure that all together we will guard the EU's external borders much better. I am sure that from the first or second day, the differences will be seen and Bulgarian citizens will feel the comfort of our full membership in the Schengen area," the Prime Minister said.
There will be border police officers in the border crossing area to assist traffic and select vehicles for inspection both randomly and in case of suspicion of risk related to passenger cars and trucks.
Among the expected advantages of the end of border checks is the increase in trade and investments, as well as growth in tourism.
