The co-ruling BSP proposes a bill to introduce a ceiling on the markup for basic foods. The leader of Stand Up.BG, Maya Manolova, who yesterday announced her candidacy for ombudsman, told the Bulgarian National Radio that the measure concerns 70 products from the small consumer basket, explaining that the list should be determined by the Council of Ministers.

The measure should apply to retail stores that have an annual turnover of over 5 million euros. Sanctions in the amount of 3% of the retailer's annual turnover are also envisaged, Manolova said.

"Bulgarian households are a donor to these unreasonably rising prices. This requires the state to intervene and protect consumers," Manolova said. She also accused large retail chains of making billions in profits that flow to their parent companies abroad.
