Vazrazhdane party declared they were opposed to the sale of two Russian reactors intended for use in the failed Belene nuclear power plant project to Ukraine.

“Belene NPP is one of the most advanced nuclear power plant projects in Europe, and we could be among the first countries to renew and extend our nuclear capacities,” said Vazrazhdane MP Iskra Mihaylova, and added that the sale of the equipment is not to Bulgaria’s economic advantage. “If Ukraine is capable of building nuclear capacities with Russian technology and specialists, then why can’t Bulgaria,” she asked.

Ukraine has expressed an interest in acquiring the two reactors, as well as the entirety of the equipment for the Belene nuclear power plant project which Bulgaria terminated. We are now checking whether the steam generators for the Belene project could be used at the Kozloduy NPP, Tsanko Bachiyski, chairman of the Bulgarian Nuclear Regulatory Agency stated.

The sale of the equipment will mean terminating the Belene NPP project definitively. To construct a nuclear power plant using another technology, work would have to start from scratch – choosing site, permits etc. Tsanko Bachiysk said.
