Mountain Rescue Service warns that hikes should be done with the necessary equipment

The weather in the mountains is cloudy with moderate wind in the higher parts. According to information from the Bulgarian Mountain Rescue Service website, the conditions for winter sports and hiking in the mountains are not very good. 

There are icy sections and rescuers warn tourists in the mountains to be especially careful. For hikes, they should be prepared with crampons, while for more serious climbs, they should carry an ice axe and rope. Skiers must ride with sharpened edges to overcome icy areas on the slopes. On Vitosha, the snow cover is between 55 and 70 cm, and in Bansko, the most snow is 150 - 170 cm on Todorka and the Plateau. in Borovets and the Rila Lakes, the snow cover is between 115 - 160 cm. In Pamporovo, it is cloudy and the snow cover is 80 cm. In the Balkan Mountain on Botev Peak, the snow cover is 144 cm and there is fog. Light snow is falling above Osogovo.
