Kiril Petkov, co-chairman of We Continue the Change (PP), is to be tried over the arrest of GERB leader Boyko Borissov on March 17 2022. Prosecutors submitted the charges against Petkov to the Sofia City Court two months after he voluntarily waived his parliamentary immunity.
Petkov is charged with overstepping his powers as prime minister by ordering police chiefs to immediately open pre-trial proceedings against Borissov, former Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov and GERB press secretary Sevdelina Arnaudova. This was done in violation of the law, since only investigators have the right to investigate members of the executive. Also, in violation of the law, the prosecutor was not immediately informed of these actions.
Kiril Petkov is also accused of having ordered the detention of the three for 24 hours with the aim of undermining their prestige and good name in society, and thereby undermining the prestige of the executive power.
