Protest against the adoption of the euro to be held on February 22

The Vazrazhdane parliamentary party is organizing a protest on February 22 in front of the Bulgarian National Bank against Bulgaria's entry into the Eurozone and for preserving the Bulgarian lev.

Other parties and civil organizations are expected to join.

"We expect tens of thousands of Bulgarians to come out and defend the financial sovereignty of the state," MP Deyan Nikolov from Vazrazhdane said at a press conference. The nationalist party does not rule out extreme actions.

According to Nikolov, 600,000 Bulgarians are demanding a referendum to preserve the Bulgarian lev. He quotes economist Steve Hanke, known as the "father of the currency board in Bulgaria," who last week stated at a roundtable in the National Assembly organized by Vazrazhdane that Bulgaria should preserve its currency board.

The MIR party, which also declared itself against Bulgaria's entry into the Eurozone, has demanded the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Zafirov because of his statement that "the Bulgarian lev is just a coupon" and that protecting the Bulgarian lev is not protecting national sovereignty, BNR reporter Maria Fileva reported.
