President Radev: Only the Bulgarian Parliament can decide whether to hold a referendum on the euro

Bulgaria has made a commitment to join the common European currency since the signing of the EU Accession Treaty. This was reminded by President Rumen Radev to students from Plovdiv University "Paisiy Hilendarski". The head of state's words were in response to the request of the Vazrazhdane party that he convene a referendum to preserve the Bulgarian lev.

"There is no way I can issue a decree to hold a referendum on the euro, because I cannot violate the law. This must be categorically clear - only the Bulgarian Parliament can decide whether to have a referendum or not," Radev said, emphasizing that Bulgaria is a country governed by the rule of law and the laws must be respected.

According to him, the currency change must take place when we are ready for it, namely when we fulfill the Maastricht criteria.
