Bulgaria cannot intervene in espionage case against Bulgarians in the UK, says PM Zhelyazkov

Bulgaria cannot intervene in the espionage case against Bulgarian citizens in the UK. This was stated by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov during parliamentary question time, in response to a question from the Velichie party. "Criminal justice is carried out under the jurisdiction of the country where the crime was committed," Zhelyazkov said.

Five Bulgarians - Orlin Rusev, Biser Dzhambazov, Katrin Ivanova, Ivan Stoyanov and Vanya Gaberova - have been charged with conspiring to obtain or exchange information between August 2020 and February 2023 that could be - or was intended to be - "directly or indirectly useful for a purpose prejudicial to the security and interests of the United Kingdom". A sixth Bulgarian, Tihomir Ivanchev, was later arrested. They are believed to be members of a spy cell working for Russia, led by Austrian Jan Marsalek.
