Unemployment is low, but most job vacancies are in Sofia

Unemployment in Bulgaria is below 4 per cent, according to NSI data for March quoted and summarised by BNT.

Last month also saw an 8% increase in job offers in the hospitality, trade and sales sectors. At the same time, there was a decline of 1% compared to the previous 2024 for this period. Varna, Burgas, Ruse, Stara Zagora and Plovdiv are the cities where the number of job offers has increased. Sofia ranks sixth in terms of growth, but still accounts for the highest number of vacancies - 40% of all listings nationwide.

A decrease in remote work is observed — a 4% decline and 1% decrease compared to the previous year. Job offers for remote work make up only 8% of all job postings. The decline is most pronounced in the IT sector (47%), followed by administrative and support services (18%), outsourcing (15%) and trade and sales (11%).

A third of job vacancies require no previous experience. Recruiters say this reflects the failure of the education system to produce enough skilled workers. Analysts argue that increasing salaries alone will not solve the skills shortage.
