The Ministry of Justice has published for public discussion a package of legislative changes against delay in serious road accident cases. These measures are the result of a commitment made by Minister of Justice Georgi Georgiev to parents whose children died in traffic accidents.

Some of the changes include allowing expert witnesses to be questioned via video conferencing to reduce delay in cases, as well as granting the Minister of Justice the authority to request the exclusion from the lists of the courts of experts who systematically fail to fulfil their duties. A new type of forensic road expertise will be established to assess the impact of road infrastructure on an accident.

For its part, the Ministry of Interior will propose to the cabinet a set of measures to improve road safety, Minister Daniel Mitov said. Among these measures are speed recording by toll cameras, the placement of alert strips, the installation of traffic bollards on roads and in hazardous sections, maintaining constant presence of traffic police and changes to the way fines are issued and paid. Additionally, unmarked vehicles of the Ministry of Interior will monitor traffic violations.
