Bulgarian household incomes outpace expenses in 2024: NSI data

The annual growth of incomes outpaced that of expenses in 2024. According to data from the National Statistical Institute, in 2024 the average annual total income per household member in Bulgaria reached 12,857 BGN (6,573.68 EUR) and increased by 18.5% compared to 2023. On the other hand, Bulgarian households spent 11,712 BGN (5,988.25 EUR) on average per person, which is an increase of 16.6% compared to 2023.


The salary remains the main source of income, followed by pensions.

Traditionally, the largest expenses are for food and beverages. In 2024, they increased by 12.4% compared to the previous year to 3,357 BGN. (1716.41 EUR). This is about 29% of total expenses. The data show that the consumption of bread, pasta and potatoes is decreasing at the expense of soft drinks, fruit and meat. 

Housing-related expenses are in second place, increasing by 8.6% per year to 1830 BGN (935.66 EUR), and in third place are expenses for taxes and social security, which increase by 21% to 1640 BGN (838.52 EUR).
