President Rumen Radev will today meet with President of the Democratic Republic of East Timor Jose Ramos-Horta, who is on a working visit to our country.
The two will discuss opportunities for cooperation between Bulgaria and the youngest Asian country. Prospects for educational and scientific exchanges, partnership in administrative capacity building, development of trade and economic relations and investment will also be discussed.
Jose Ramos-Horta's visit is the first bilateral visit since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2003. In 1996, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize together with his compatriot Carlos Felipe Ximenes Belo for his efforts to find a just and peaceful solution to the conflict in East Timor.
At least 100,000 people died in the long and bloody struggle for independence, according to Reuters. East Timor, also known as Timor Leste, was officially recognised by the United Nations in 2002.
