The Bulgarian Embassy in Washington organized an official ceremony to unveil a memorial plaque in honor of Dimitar Peshev, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly in the period 1940–1943. He initiated the action against the deportation of Bulgarian Jews to Nazi concentration camps.

“The protest letter signed by 42 members of parliament, along with the determined resistance of Bulgarian society, contributed to the saving of nearly 50,000 Bulgarian Jews during World War II,” Ambassador Georgi Panayotov recalled.

Back in 2013, the intersection in front of the Bulgarian Embassy was named after Dimitar Peshev. The new plaque will give additional publicity to his valour and humaneness shown during the Holocaust. The ceremony was attended by leaders of American Jewish organizations and representatives of the State Department.
