Parliament Speaker Kiselova: Radev's referendum proposal is controversial

President Rumen Radev's intention to call a national referendum has drawn criticism from Parliament Speaker Nataliya Kiselova, who described the proposal as "controversial" during a briefing with journalists.

Kiselova noted that while the president has the constitutional right to propose that the National Assembly consider a national referendum, she stressed that the proposal must be backed by clear and well-reasoned arguments. "I hope the president will present a strong justification," she said, referring to two previous Constitutional Court rulings that define the limits of the legislature's power to initiate referendums on certain issues.

One of those rulings, issued last year, specifically addressed a referendum question on the euro and led to the rejection of the proposal. Kiselova indicated that the parliament would examine the president's justification in the coming weeks.
