President Radev is set to appeal to the Constitutional Court over the rejected referendum on the euro

President Rumen Radev will be taking the issue to the Constitutional Court, after the National Assembly refused to hold a referendum on the question: "Do you agree that Bulgaria should adopt the single European currency, the euro, in 2026?" He announced his intention to do so at Sofia Airport before leaving on an official visit to Japan.

"Scenarios are being staged in political circles that aim to stifle important societal issues," commented the head of state. In his words, that the suggestion that the referendum he proposed is against the euro is an insult to the intelligence of Bulgarians.

Radev believes that his proposal for a national referendum is already yielding results. "At last, debates have begun on our real readiness to adopt the euro next year. At last, we have heard Mr Peevski and Mr Borisov mention 'prices' and the 'need for control' — albeit too late and under pressure," he said.

The president emphasised that the clear goal is for every Bulgarian citizen to be able to express their opinion on whether Bulgaria is ready to adopt the euro next year.
