St. Methodius Day to be celebrated in Ellwangen, Germany

According to the Bulgarian Cultural Centre in Berlin, St. Methodius Day will be commemorated in Ellwangen on 24 May

The tradition of celebrating the day in the town was established in 1970 at the initiative of Bulgaria and with the support of the mayor at the time, Karl Wöhr.

The day pays tribute to the work of St. Methodius in spreading and establishing the Cyrillic alphabet as an integral part of the lives of many Slavic peoples around the world. The location was chosen because St. Methodius was exiled to Ellwangen for three years between 870 and 873.

The Lazarka folk group will be taking part in the celebrations.
