Bulgaria Today – 26 May 2025

Welcome to Bulgaria Today, the English-language podcast of Radio Bulgaria, on May 26 hosted by Rositsa Petkova.
This Monday in Bulgaria is an official non-working day as part of a three-day break following the Day of Bulgarian Culture May 24, when we celebrate also the day of educators and teachers and the role of literature and the written word in our history and modern lives.
In today’s programme we will stay in the spirit of this very important holiday for Bulgaria and will talk first about an initiative of the National library to organize special workshops where children can learn to write in the Glagolithic alphabet - the first Slavic alphabet that preceded the Cyrillic alphabet.
Also, we bring you an interview with a Bulgarian primary school teacher and what are the challenges in trying to preserve the use of the Bulgarian language in Brussels as part of the European school there?
Tourism comes next with what attracts foreigners to the Bulgarian capital – Sofia has been seeing rising numbers of visitors in recent years. What are some of the reasons?
Of course, there will be also Bulgarian music on the show.
Have an enjoyable listen!
  • 06’33 –  Bulgarians Abroad: Teacher Natalia Staykova – the battle abroad is to preserve the Bulgarian language
  • 17’18 – Song of the day: "Rhodope Dream" – inspired by Bulgarian folklore
