Students of medicine, young doctors and medical specialists from six towns – Sofia, Plovdiv, Pleven, Burgas, Varna and Stara Zagora – are staging protests simultaneously demanding higher pay, better working conditions and work time regulation, BGNES reports.

In front of the Ministry of Health building in Sofia the protesters raised posters reading: “I want a future in Bulgaria!”, “Salary – 2,000 Leva (EUR 1022) max, rent – 1,200 Leva (EUR 613) min”, “We have no motivation!”.

The protesters say the average salary for a healthcare specialist is equal to the average salary for the country, or a little over. The average monthly pay for a novice doctor at a state-run or municipal hospital is 1,998 Leva per month (EUR 1021), and for a nurse at the same hospitals – 1,500 Leva (EUR 766).

The young doctors are demanding a gross basic salary 3.5 times higher than the minimum salary for the country, and for nurses, rehabilitation specialists and medical assistants – 150% of the average salary for the country.
