The majority of Bulgarians are optimistic about the EU. They expect the community to ensure peace first and foremost. This is according to Eurobarometer data presented by the European Commission, as reported by BTA.

When asked what EU action would improve their lives in the short term, 45% of Bulgarians and 44% of EU citizens said ensuring peace. A majority of 78% in the EU and 73% in Bulgaria are concerned about European defence. Sixty-two per cent of people in the EU and 57 per cent of Bulgarians are completely optimistic about the future of the EU. Fifty-one per cent of Bulgarians and 43 per cent of Europeans have a positive attitude towards the Union. Twenty-six per cent in Bulgaria and 38 per cent of European citizens have a neutral attitude.

For the first time since 2007, trust in the EU stands at 52% in the EU, and even higher — 53% in Bulgaria. Sixty-two per cent of Bulgarians expect the country's economy to improve in the next 12 months.

The most significant differences in opinion are on the war in Ukraine and European aid to Kyiv. Bulgarians lag significantly behind the overall European attitude of support.
