Hundreds of believers joined the open-air liturgy in the center of the second largest city in Bulgaria - Plovdiv, on the occasion of 1700 years since the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea and the feast of the heavenly patron of the city - the holy apostle Hermes, reported reporter Kremena Daneva from the Bulgarian National Radio - Plovdiv.

Metropolitans and hierarchs, including from the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Patriarchate of Alexandria and other Orthodox churches, took part in the solemn service, led by Metropolitan Nikolay. Among the guests was Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (Prime Minister of Bulgaria in the period 2001 - 2005).

The spiritual celebration began with a morning service in the metropolitan church "St. Marina", from where a procession later set off to the "Central" square in the city.

The culmination of the church celebrations will be at 9 p.m. in the courtyard of the Assumption Cathedral, where the orchestra and choir of the Plovdiv Opera will perform a concert with Church Slavonic and classical music, reports Yanitsa Marova from the Bulgarian National Radio - Plovdiv.
