Bulgarian President Rumen Radev, who attended the National Assembly of Sheep Breeders at the Peter and Paul Monastery near Lyaskovets, greeted the protesters today in various cities of the country demanding a referendum on the euro and the preservation of the Bulgarian lev, BNR correspondent Zdravka Maslyankova reported.

"I want to congratulate all the people who are freely expressing their opinion today, and my cause as president is precisely democracy. I want the people to be heard, because they are faced with prices that the state obviously cannot control," the president told journalists.

"It is clear that the black hole of the oligarchy is increasingly swallowing the Bulgarian political system," he added. When asked by the Bulgarian National Radio what the way to overcome this "black hole" is, the president replied:

"The way is a new political alternative that will oppose the conquest of the country by this oligarchic model, the pressure and obsession of business, the racketeering on business." When asked whether Radev is ready to lead this new political alternative after his mandate expires, the president replied: "This will come from the people who want their voice to be heard and to whom the authorities do not pay attention."
