Future generations must know that there were periods when human rights and dignity were worthless. This was emphasized at the annual pilgrimage in memory of the victims of the totalitarian communist regime in the Belene concentration camp by the Minister of Justice Georgi Georgiev, BTA reported. The minister emphasized that this should never happen again.

He unveiled a memorial plaque placed on the administrative building of the Belene prison, the Ministry of Justice announced.

"Between 1949 and 1987, the communist regime sent nearly 20,000 camp inmates and political prisoners to Belene Island. A tribute to them and their families! Never again totalitarianism in Bulgaria!" reads the inscription on the symbolic memorial, prepared at the initiative of the Ministry of Justice.

Georgiev announced that a procedure has been initiated to grant the former Belene concentration camp the necessary status as a place of historical memory.
