Twenty beaches on Northern Black Sea coast without lifeguards this season

A total of 20 beaches in the Dobrich municipalities of Shabla, Kavarna and Balchik will be left unguarded during the summer season, BNR’s correspondent Maya Raynova reports. The regional governor has expressed the hope that the state will take over lifeguarding activities for 4 of them.

For the third year running the regional councils of the Bulgarian Red Cross have refused to take part in the lifeguarding of the sea beaches because there has been no change in payment, said the organization’s director Artyun Erinozov. “The financing is very low – for these beaches which are outside populated areas more financing is needed – for transport, for accommodation, for food for the lifeguards, for salaries, for equipment for the lifeguard stations,” he said.

Statical data show the number of drownings is down, Dr. Erinozov says, still the number of beaches without lifeguards in the region of Dobrich remains too high.
