Bulgaria aims to launch the 7th unit at Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant in 2035

The challenges facing the energy sector in Bulgaria and the region were discussed by the Minister of Energy Zhecho Stankov and the Executive Vice-President of the European Commission for Clean, Fair and Competitive Transition Teresa Ribera, the relevant ministry announced.

Stankov paid special attention to the future of coal regions, because in the transition period, lignite coal remains a key element of Bulgaria's energy security. 

"We are discussing the possibilities for mixing lignite coal with biomass in order to reduce carbon emissions," Stankov explained.

The projects for units 7 and 8 at the Kozloduy NPP and the prospects for the construction of 4 new pumped storage water plants were presented as a major part of the efforts to synchronize the national energy sector with the EU's green goals. The ambition is for the 7th unit of the Kozloduy NPP to be put into operation in 2035, and the 8th unit - two years later.
