The civic association “Doyran 2025” has initiated a procedure for a referendum with questions about Bulgaria’s membership in the European Union and the eurozone, announced the association’s chairperson Rumyana Chenalova at a press conference held at the National Press Club of the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency.
The questions concern whether Bulgaria should leave the EU and the eurozone, whether it is necessary to renegotiate the terms of membership, whether a currency board should be introduced in the event of a possible exit from the eurozone, and whether Bulgaria should adopt a national digital currency. Two questions about the referendum procedure are also included, as the organizers argue that the current threshold of 400,000 signatures is excessively high.
''Due to the time required to carry out the referendum initiation procedure, it will most likely take place in early 2026. This means that we will already be in the eurozone, as the date for the adoption of the euro is January 1'', said Rumiana Chenalova. She emphasized that ''Doyran 2025'' is not against the European Union, but opposes the dismantling of the original concept of an economic union of sovereign states.
According to Simeon Milanov, ''the will of more than 60% of Bulgarians who are opposed to joining the eurozone is being disregarded''.
