One of India’s most renowned dance ensembles, performing in the Odissi style, will showcase its art in Bulgaria. From 13 to 17 August, fans of Indian culture in Kyustendil, Sofia, Burgas and Varna will have the opportunity to enjoy performances by the dance company, led by Ms Arupa Gayatri Panda, who is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished Odissi dancers of her generation.

Odissi is one of the most revered forms of Indian classical dance. Traditionally performed by female dancers known as Mahari, this style is characterised by its unique grace, lyricism and refinement, as well as a strong focus on devotional expression. The dancers bring to life mythical stories about Hindu gods and convey spiritual messages through intricate body movements, adorned in rich costumes, elaborate jewellery, and distinctive stage make-up.

The ensemble’s visit to Bulgaria is supported by the Embassy of the Republic of India in Sofia, in cooperation with the Indology Foundation 'East – West' and with the active assistance of the local municipalities. All events are free to attend.
